Vishnu Sahastranam

Hi 23. Keśavaḥ

केशवः
The one who has beautiful hair.

Keshava (Sanskrit: केशव keśava) is a name of Vishnu from within Hindu tradition. The name appears as the 23rd and 648th names in the Vishnu sahasranama of Mahabharata. Lord Keshava is venerated by those persons wanting to avert bad luck, or ill omens. His consort is Keerti.

The word Keśava has more than one meaning.  This can be looked upon as a word that indicates Parameśvara or the avatāra, that is, the manifest form of Īśvara, especially as Śrī Kr̥ṣṇa.

Abhirūpāḥ keśāḥ yasya saḥ keśavaḥ–one who has beautiful locks of hair.Śrī Kr̥ṣṇa is a particular form of the Lord. Once a form is given, this is the saguṇa aspect and it has attributes.  The form with the attributes helps one to visualize and relate to the Lord.  So, Śrī Kr̥ṣṇa is a form with beautiful locks of hair and the name Keśava indicates that.

Alternately,  kaśca aśca īśaśca keśāḥ–‘ka’ is Brahmāji; ‘a’ is Visnu and ‘īśa’ is Rudra; hence ‘kesah’ denote the trimu ̅rtis, Brahmāji, Viṣṇu and Rudra.  Te yadvaśe vartante – these trimūrtis constitute whom, He is Keśava.  Here, each of the trimūrtis represents an aspect of Īśvara from three different stand-points, that is, creation, sustenance and resolution.  Since they have been delegated their work, they are under the control of Parameśvara.

Keśivadhāt vā keśavaḥ – He is also known as Keśava, because of slaying the asura called Keśī.  Keśī was an asura who came to Brindavan in the guise of a horse to kill Sri Krsna, but he got killed by Śrī Kr̥ṣṇa.  A verse in the Viṣṇupurāṇa supports this meaning.  There, Nārada tells Śrī Kr̥ṣṇa, ‘because the duṣṭātmā Keśī was killed by you, you will be well known in the world by the name Keśava’ (5.16.23)

Why the name Keshav?

In the middle of the discussion regarding the research topics yesterday, when Professor Dr. VP Agrawal asked me if I knew why I was named Keshav (Keshava), I was confused how to begin.

Keshava is one of the names of Lord Krishna. And, I knew this. Since yesterday with my limited knowledge of Sanskrit language, I was of the opinion that the word got derived from two other words Ka (=water) and Shava (=dead body). If you go into the Sanskrit linguistics, you will get to know how true I am.

Also, I believed that there would be some legend with regards to Lord Krishna, water and dead body, which I had not known yet, behind the genesis of the name.

And, I preferred telling him this thing. I recited a humorous stanza in Sanskrit which has two meanings. It talks about Keshava (Lord Krishna), Kaurava and Drona.

केशवं पतितम् दृष्ट्वा
द्रोणाहर्षमुपागतम्
रुदन्ति कौरवा: सर्वे
हाहा केशव केशव।।

Keshavam patitam drishtwaa
Dronaah harshamupaagatam
Rudanti Kauravaah sarve
Haha! Keshava Keshava!

The first meaning may be pertained to the great war of Mahabharata. “When Lord Keshava fell down, Drona was delighted but the Kauravas started crying.” But this doesn’t make good relation with the original story of the Mahabharata.

Meanwhile, the literal meaning of the verse is

* Ke shavam patitam drishtwaa == by seeing dead body falling in water

(Ka= water, Ke= in water, patitam=falling, drishtwaa=by seeing)

* Dronaah harshamupaagatam == Crows came to the state of joyfulness

(Drona= crow, Dronaah= crows, Harsha(m)= joyfulness, upaagatam=came)

* Rudanti Kauravaah sarve = All the Kauravas cry

(Rudanti = cry, Kauravaah= the Kauravas, sarve=all)

*Haha! Keshava Keshava= hey Keshava, hey Keshava!

———————————————————————-

The professor was, with interest, listening to me. I was “through” making evident my ‘noesis’ on linguistics and legend. And, the learned elderly gently smiled at me and said, “Well Keshav, this name got established when Lord Krishna killed a demon called Kishi who had called to take life of the baby Krishna.”

Okay. This is the legend then. Thanks to the professor of Bio-chemistry, he taught me something related to the mythology which I did not knew earlier.

After all, we can learn new things every time with anybody.

Right now, it will be appropriate to remember Lord Dattatreya, who had considered even the beasts as his guru.

MADHAVA another name for KRISHAN meaning:-

Madhava (Sanskrit: माधव) is another name for Krishan and appears as the 72nd, 167th and 735th names in the Vishnu sahastranama.

From the Bhagavad Gita it is understood to refer to Vishnu being the husband of the goddess of fortune (Lakshmi). Arjuna addresses Krishna in the first chapter as follows:

"What should we gain, O Krishan, husband of the goddess of fortune, and how could we be happy by killing our own kinsmen?" (Bhagavad-Gita 1.36)

Also in the Bhagavad-Gita, Arjuna address Krishna as "Madhava" (meaning "Lord of fortune and also slayer of the demon Madhu.

According to Adi Sankara' s commentary on the Vishnu sahasranama, Madhava means the consort (dhava) of the Mother (Ma), or Mahalaksmi, the Mother of the universe. Alternatively, it means on who is fit to be known through Madhu-vidya or can mean One who is the Lord of "Ma" or knowledge.

Also madhav means Lord of Mouna+Dhyana+Yoga

Also Madhav means husband of goddess of fortune.

Donkey

PERSONAL PERCEPTION

Different people have different perception. One man's meat could be another man's poison. A couple bought a donkey from the market.

On the way home,a boy commented, "Very stupid. Why neither of them ride on the donkey?"Upon hearing that, the husband let the wife ride on the donkey. He walked besides them.

Later, an old man saw it and commented, "The husband is the head of family. How can the wife ride on the donkey while the husband is on foot?" Hearing this, the wife quickly got down and let the husband ride on the donkey.

Further on the way home, they met an old Lady. She commented, "How can the man ride on the donkey but let the wife walk. He is no gentleman."

The husband thus quickly asked the wife to join him on the donkey. Then, they met a young man. He commented, "Poor donkey, how can you hold up the weight of two persons. They are cruel to you." Hearing that, the husband and wife immediately climbed down from the donkey and carried it on their shoulders.

It seems to be the only choice left. Later, on a narrow bridge, the donkey was frightened and struggled. They lost their balance and fell into the river. You can never have everyone praise you, nor will everyone condemn you. Never in the past, not at present, and never will be in the future.

Thus, do not be too bothered by others words if our conscience is clear..

Just for Today

Just For Today.......

Bringing about a change within can seem overwhelming. The road seems too difficult, and so most people do not even try. They convince themselves that it is impossible for them to change. When we look at the whole picture, we become discouraged. So, it is better to tackle one day at a time. Manage the change day by day. Do it gradually. Tell yourself....

Hence Just for today, I will satisfy my sweet tooth with apples and raisins instead of chocolate and cookies.
Just for today, I will not speak harsh words to anyone.
Just for today,I will drink 8 glasses of water.
Just for today,I will wear a smile instead of a frown.
Just for today,I will do a good deed for a complete stranger.
Just for today, I will sit in prayer and control my wandering mind.
Just for today, I will exercise for half an hour.
Just for today, I will have a big salad for dinner.
Just for today,I will not eat after 8 p.m.
Just for today,I will control my anger.
Just for today, I will try to bring comfort to another human.
Just for today, I will follow my Guru's instruction.
Just for today, I will read a good book attentively.
Just for today, I will let my answering machine pick up my messages.
Just for today, I will go for a long walk and appreciate God's beauty.
Just for today, I will relax my body and my mind.
Just for today, I will not criticize anyone.
Just for today, I will count my blessings......Jai Ambe Maa.........

Ganesh Visarjan

Till today as we are coming to end of Shri Ganesh festivities many don't understand the Symbolism of Ganapati Visarjan .

Why is Ganesha Murti immersed in Water after Ganesh Chaturthi festival?
Vinayaka Chaturthi or Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations end with the immersion or Visarjan of clay Ganapati Murti in water.

Hindus worship Brahman or the Supreme Soul present in all animate and inanimate. But for majority of the people it is not possible to worship this formlessness. They need a form to pray to, to seek help, to cry and to take blessings. Shri Ganesha is ‘OM’ the primordial sound or the first ‘Vaak.’ Nirguna Para Brahman takes the form of Ganesha.

Clay and water is mixed to give form to the formlessness. Each person brings Shri Ganesha in clay Murti form into the home. This is the Supreme Being arriving at home. After the celebrations, it is time to accept the eternal cosmic law that which took form has to become formless again. It is a never ending cycle (Chakra).

The formlessness giving way to form and then moving again towards formlessness. Each year Shri Ganesha arrives to teach us that forms change but the Supreme Truth remains the same. Body perishes but Brahman residing in it remains constant. This body becomes energy for another but the source of energy is the same. Bliss is achieved when we realize this.

The act also symbolizes the concept of Moksha, or liberation, in Hinduism. Osho says – ‘Absolute unclinging. That is what is meant by Moksha – freedom – no clinging, not even to gods.’ Thus we create Shri Ganesha out of clay, worship it and later it is submerged (Visarjan)...Jai Ganapati Jai Jai.....

Ganesh Jayanti

Namaskar, Ganesh Jayanti will be celebrated tomorrow Sunday 4th. In the USA, Canada, Trinidad and Guyana  ( if they are following th e patra) India will celebrate Ganesh Jayanti on Monday.
The big question Why?: Lord Krishna took avtaar  (incarnate ) as Ganesh Bhagwaan on the 4th( Chowth  tithi) day of the bright half of Bhadrapad ,it was midday.
Chowth tithi begins@6 :54pm in india because of the time difference, Chowth Vrat begins in the West @9:24 am, which means that we ( in the west) should celebrate on Sunday and not Monday,  Chowth Vrat begins in USA, Guyana 9:24 am on Sunday and ends 11:39am Monday.
Auspicious time for Ganesh Bhagwaan puja is 11:37am-2:11pm Sunday NOT Monday.
PLEASE DON'T LOOK AT THE MOON BETWEEN 9:27AM-9:11pm SUNDAY &10:24am- 9:42 PM MONDAY  ( because of the shraap given by Ganesh Bhagwaan to Chandra Dev)
Hope this can help remove some of our doubts
Jai shri Ganesh
